Vijayakanth has starred in various hits such as like Amman Koil Kizhakkaley, Vaidegi Kathirundal, Chinna Gounder, Vallarasu, Vanathai Pola,Sethupathi IPS, Captian Prabakaran, Ulavu Thurai,Periyanna, Kannupada Pokuthayya ,Ramana, Neranja Manasu, Sabari. He was considered as the Third major star in Tamil films after Rajnikanth and Kamal Haasan in the 80s and early 90s till now. He is instrumental in giving break to actors like Mansoor Ali Khan , Livingston, Saroja Sampath and Sarath Kumar . Of late he has stopped accepting offers from other producers and is also keen in acting on his own banner films.

Vijayakanth is the only leading actor from Tamil Film Industry who has done only Tamil Films in his entire filmography of 150 Films. Moreover he has the habit of giving break to New directors. After a string of Average films, Arasangam , Vijayakanth's 150th film was declared as Super Hit.
He has been involved in several charity works. Vijayakanth served as the President of Nadigar Sangam before entering politics and was instrumental in holding star nite shows in Dubai and Malaysia. He bailed out Nadigar Sangam from huge debts during his tenure.
Vijaykanth as the leader of the Nadikar Sangam has proved to be a good administrator and able leader.
